Getting started
Start on the flat and let the horse walk over everything before you jump a thing.
- 01Lay the poles flat on the ground first — walk and trot over them in a straight line until the rhythm never changes.
- 02Set one small cross-pole in the middle of a long side, wings square, cups level on both sides.
- 03Approach in a steady trot, eyes up, and let the horse find the jump — no chasing, no pulling.
- 04Weigh the wings down with the sand bags on breezy days so nothing shifts between rounds.
- 05Finish on a good jump, however small. Ten quiet efforts beat fifty tired ones.
TipGround poles at roughly 1.2–1.3m apart for trot work suit most horses; move them out slightly for a big-striding horse.
General guidance only. Always school within your own and your horse's ability, on safe going, with FEI-standard safety cups fitted on back rails and a competent person on hand.
