Cups, safety cups, soft poles and water trays — small details that change how every fence rides.
Set your cups and accessories correctly and half the safety work is done.
01Set both cups at the same height on each wing — check by eye from the side, not the front.
02Use shallow cups for front rails so a knock drops the pole cleanly.
03Fit FEI-standard safety cups on the back rail of every oxer, without exception.
04Soft poles are ideal for first grids and flatwork with green horses or young riders.
Small adjustments to cups and trays change how a fence rides.
01Drop the front rail of an oxer slightly below the back to encourage a good bascule.
02Use low cups to raise ground poles for a rounder, more athletic step.
03Introduce a water tray flat under a low pole before jumping it as a question.
04Keep a few spare cups arena-side so a session isn't interrupted.
Accessory detail is what separates a schooling fence from a competition fence.
01Use safety cups throughout on all back rails and any fence you jump at height.
02Vary cup depth deliberately to school carefulness ahead of a show.
03Set water and tray questions mid-course rather than in isolation.
04Inspect every cup, pin and pole cap before each session — wear is the usual cause of a fall.
TipAlways fit FEI-standard safety cups on the back rail of any oxer, work on level, well-maintained going, and wear a helmet and body protector.
General guidance only. Always school within your own and your horse's ability, on safe going, with FEI-standard safety cups fitted on back rails and a competent person on hand.
