Beginners' guidance on getting started with the 5 Jump Set. More levels coming soon.

Getting started

Set the jumps out wide and low, and treat the first sessions as a tour of the equipment.

  1. 01Lay every pole flat first and walk the horse past and over each filler in-hand or under saddle.
  2. 02Set two well-spaced cross-poles on opposite long sides so there is plenty of room to recover between them.
  3. 03Trot each fence individually before ever joining them together.
  4. 04Use the sand bags on all wings and uprights before you start — especially outdoors.
  5. 05Keep sessions short: two or three jumping days a week is plenty for most horses.

TipWings should be set square and just wider than the pole so a rub knocks the pole cleanly out of the cup.

General guidance only. Always school within your own and your horse's ability, on safe going, with FEI-standard safety cups fitted on back rails and a competent person on hand.
