Looking After Your Tack Locker
Care and cleaning advice for a heavy-duty stainless steel, powder-coated tack locker — drawers, racks, wheels and everyday yard use.

A tack locker lives a harder life than almost anything else on a yard. It gets loaded wet, wheeled over gravel, packed into a horsebox and opened with muddy hands. Ours is built for that — stainless steel, powder coated, on 6-inch inflatable wheels — but a few habits will keep it looking like the day it arrived.
Everyday habits
- Wipe the outside down. Warm water, mild detergent, soft cloth. That is it. Skip scouring pads and harsh chemical cleaners — they are what dull a powder-coated finish.
- Do not put tack away soaking. Damp leather in a closed locker is bad for the leather long before it is bad for the locker. Let saddles and bridles dry, then rack them.
- Leave it open to air. After a wet day, prop the door for an hour while you are finishing up.
Drawers and racks
The bottom drawer, three sliding drawers, two bridle racks and two saddle racks are the parts you use hardest. Keep the drawer runners free of loose grit and hay seed — a quick brush out now and again is all they ask. Load heavy items low: bottom drawer first, so the locker stays stable when it is being wheeled.
Wheels and moving it
The 6-inch inflatable wheels are there so a fully loaded locker rolls over yard surfaces instead of being dragged. Check they are properly inflated before you move it — a soft wheel is what makes a locker feel heavy and what damages a rim. Pull rather than push over rough ground, and take corners wide so the body does not catch on door frames or ramps.
Competitions and travel
Going to a show, close and secure the drawers before the locker moves, and chock or strap it in the box so it is not free to roll in transit. Wheel it down the ramp rather than lifting it.
Long-term
Stainless steel and powder coating handle yard life well, but the finish will always last longest under cover rather than parked outdoors year-round in the rain. If the locker does live outside, wipe it down more often — salt, sand and muck sitting on any finish for months is what shortens its life.
